Eugene Stewart OBITUARY
Eugene Stewart, a remarkable individual, transitioned peacefully on June 4, 2024. Born in Sledge, Mississippi, on June 15, 1950, to Ovell and Early Mae Stewart, Eugene embodied strength, resilience, and joy throughout his life. He moved to Gary, IN, as a child, where he grew up in the Small Farms neighborhood. His early years were filled with exploration and the development of his athletic talents. A high school athlete at Calumet High, he excelled in basketball and track. Eugene dedicated himself to family, fatherhood, and fellowship in his mid-life. From fishing trips and city explorations, to playing cards and “roaming,” he embraced each moment with laughter and enthusiasm. His family expanded to include three children: Antione (Nancy) Stewart, Hubert “Man” Brown, and Ashley Stewart, who became his devoted caretaker. Eugene had a diverse and impactful career. A true jack of all trades, he worked in sales and the steel mill, showcased his artistic side as a skilled florist, demonstrated his craftsmanship by building and renovating houses, and so much more. He concluded his professional journey as a respected St. Anthony Hospital team member, leaving an enduring legacy of compassion and dedication. Eugene’s journey was one of triumph over adversity. He welcomed a child in his 40s, beat cancer in his 50s, and embraced retirement with newfound vigor. Eugene faced his health battles head-on, triumphing over penile cancer and living with the rare neurodegenerative disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) for an extraordinary seven years. Despite the odds, he taught us all the importance of a positive outlook and unwavering resilience. Preceding Eugene in death were his parents, Ovell and Early Mae Stewart, and siblings Aaron Stewart, Corean Campbell, Dorothy Stewart, Idella Berry, Oliver Stewart, Occie Stokes, and Pauline McCain. Cherishing his memory are his three children: Antione (Nancy) Stewart of Indianapolis, IN; Hubert “Man” Brown and Ashley Stewart, both of Gary, IN; his grandchildren; two sisters, Henrietta Williamson and Mamie Stewart; a younger brother, Lester Stewart; and a host of special relatives and friends. Per Eugene’s wishes, there will be no visitation.
