The Dallas Mavericks’ offensive woes continue after back-to-back sub-26% shooting nights from behind the arc.

Game 2 was well within reach for the Mavs, considering Boston only shot 10-for-39 from deep. However, they could not sneak out a win, committing 15 turnovers and missing eight free throws on their way to a seven-point road loss.

Now, Dallas faces an 0-2 hole heading back home, and Boston has been an exceptional road team this postseason, winning all six of its games away from TD Garden.

Can the Mavericks hand the C’s their first postseason loss in Game 3, or will Boston all but shut the door on Dallas’s championship hopes?

What makes the Celtics so dangerous — and what has been perfectly exemplified in this series so far — is how many players they have who can take over a game offensively.

The C’s key offensive player in the first half of Game 1 was Kristaps Porzingis, who ended up with 20 points in his first game back since injuring his calf. Meanwhile, Jrue Holiday led the team in scoring (26 points) in Game 2. Those two players are their third or fourth-best offensive options on any night. Jayson Tatum has not even registered a 20-point game in the Finals yet.

Unlike Boston, Dallas has two players (Irving and Doncic) who can realistically lead the team in scoring in a playoff game, and Irving has been terrible.

While Irving could turn things around in Game 3, Boston has three players who can defend him as well as anyone else in the league. He might score, but clean looks will continue to be tough to come by.

Boston has also played better on the road (6-0) in the playoffs than at home (8-2), boasting a +11.1 net rating in those games on a team shooting split of 47/35/80. Conversely, Dallas holds a 5-3 record in front of its fans, a concerning home record for an NBA Finals squad.

The U.S. Open is back at Pinehurst No. 2 this weekend, with Scottie Scheffler seeking his second major championship win in 2024.

Further, he’s second in shots gained off the tee, fourth in scrambling and sixth in total driving.

His performance last weekend at Muirfield, a mind-testing course, gives us plenty of confidence in backing him heading into the U.S. Open, even if his short odds don’t give us a ton of value.

Aaron Rai to win (22-1, FanDuel) and top-10 finish (+1200, bet365)

Rai fits the bill of a player who can contend at Pinehurst No. 2.

Pinehurst plays long, so Rai’s fantastic long iron game will greatly help him here, as will his scrambling ability and driving accuracy.

He has two top-10 finishes in his past seven starts, making his implied probability of 9.09% finishing in the range a fantastic value.

And if Rai were to get hot with the putter, he could certainly contend on Sunday with the best of the best. A top-10 finish is reasonable, as does sprinkling an outright win at 22-1.

It’s not often NHL teams are scheduled for weeklong layoffs, as was the case for both teams in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday. Regardless, Game 1 told a unique story.

By no means was it shocking that the Panthers won as -135 favorites, but it was a surprise to see the NHL’s best defensive team need to steal a win on home ice in the fashion it did.

The two teams are back on the ice for Game 2 on Monday night. Will the Panthers take a commanding series lead or will the Oilers find a way to go back to Edmonton even?

The Panthers played one of their worst defensive games of this postseason but were bailed out by arguably the best single-game performance by any goaltender this playoff. Sergei Bobrovsky stole the show, as he finished with a +3.66 goals saved above expected rating (GSAx), which is the highest single-game mark by any goalie this postseason.

Bobrovsky saved all 32 shots fired his way by the visiting Oilers, which included a ton of quality looks. Edmonton led on high-danger chances (18-6), had 14 shots coming from the inner slot and four breakaways. The Oilers had 7:51 of offensive zone possession, which was nearly double the Panthers’ 4:51.

Bobrovsky proved just how dominant he can be in the 2023 postseason, where he finished with a +15.4 GSAx. It wasn’t new information that he was capable of such a performance, but it was the first time these playoffs that he was asked to do so much in one outing.

The Oilers are not a team that will struggle to finish off quality scoring chances very often, and a similar game script would likely go their way the vast majority of the time.

They feature Hart Trophy-winning forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, a 54-goal scorer with tremendous touch at the goal mouth in Zach Hyman, a defender featuring a wildly accurate 100 mph one-timer in Evan Bouchard, as well as a 100-point producer who’s almost an afterthought in Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

All of Edmonton’s top skaters had numerous high-danger chances on goal in Game 1. They even generated quite well against Selke Trophy-winner Aleksander Barkov’s line, as well as Gustav Forsling’s defensive pairing.
