Magdiel Perez, 27, of the first block of Lockman Circle, was convicted in April of two counts of felony sexual assault criminal following a bench trial heard by Kane County Judge John Barsanti, who also handed down the sentence, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said Perez had sexual contact on more than one occasion between May 1, 2022, and Aug. 30, 2022, with a student who attended Tefft Middle School in Streamwood, where he worked as a hall monitor. Perez would drive the victim to his home in Elgin where sexual contact would occur, the release said.

After the student disclosed what was happening, school officials contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Service and placed Perez on administrative leave.

While the state’s attorney’s office requested he be sentenced to 16 years in prison, the judge settled on an eight-year term, which is the minimum he could have assigned, the release said. Perez will be required to 85% of the sentence and must register for life as a sexual offender under state law.

“As a society, we expect for our children to be able to trust the adults working at their school,” Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey Wittman said in a statement. “This defendant took advantage of this student’s trust and sexually assaulted her. I am thankful to this victim for her willingness to face her abuser in court.”

Letters to the Editor: State must prioritize hiring more professionals to help those with disabilities; there’s gotta be a better way to select the leader of the free world https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/05/17/letters-to-the-editor-state-must-prioritize-hiring-more-professionals-to-help-those-with-disabilities-theres-gotta-be-a-better-way-to-select-the-leader-of-the-free-world/ Fri, 17 May 2024 13:53:45 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=15920140 State must prioritize hiring more professionals to help those with disabilities

Our state government is responsible for ensuring people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can access services they need to live safe, healthy and full lives in the community. But more than 15,000 people are stuck on the state’s wait list for services. And many who get taken off the list can’t find an agency with openings.

Why? The number one reason is lack of state funding for staff wages. Nonprofit service agencies can’t hire or retain nearly enough Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), the dedicated workers who make community services possible. Why would someone work as a DSP when they can make more money at a fast-food restaurant or shipping warehouse?

My family is one of the lucky ones. We found an agency that could support our son in a group home. David is 31 years old. He experienced a pre-birth brain injury that caused a number of significant disabilities. He is nonverbal, lacks fine motor skills and requires 24/7 supervision.

I’ve seen first-hand how insufficient staffing takes a toll. With only one DSP on staff most weekends, David and his three housemates cannot get out into the community to summer concerts, fall festivals and holiday parades. And the high turnover of DSPs causes them anxiety. I recently returned David to his home after an outing and he was afraid to go inside because a virtual stranger opened the door instead of a familiar DSP who understood his needs.

When lawmakers craft the state budget in coming weeks, they can finally make people with disabilities a priority. Along with thousands of Illinois families, I am pleading with them to increase DSP wages. DSPs deserve a living income, and people with disabilities deserve the critical services that DSPs provide so they can enjoy lives of dignity and purpose.

James B. Gould, Carpentersville

There’s gotta be a better way to select the leader of the free world

All things considered, this country is the wealthiest, best educated and most democratic on earth. And yet the three leading candidates to be our next leader are: 1) an 81-year-old who often stumbles over the lines of prepared speeches, 2) an almost 78-year-old who is currently facing 32 felony counts in federal court, and 3) a 70-year-old who has openly admitted to having a gaping hole in his brain.

Is that really the best and the brightest this great nation has to offer after months, if not years of intense scrutiny. What does it say about our education system or, better yet, our parenting skills? Surely, there has to be a better way of choosing finalists for the most demanding job in the entire world.

Maybe we should require Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people to meet on a remote island. There, one-by-one, they’d be voted off until only two remain. Those people would then go head-to-head with the “Jeopardy Master’s Championship” as well as the winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on every television channel.

At least then there’d be no need for recounts, no hanging chads and no chance for a replay of Jan. 6. Of course, if a 12-year-old nerd unexpectedly won, it would present a whole different set of problems.

Man responsible for West Dundee cop’s ‘life-altering’ injury gets 8-year prison term https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/04/27/man-responsible-for-west-dundee-cops-life-altering-injury-gets-8-year-prison-term/ Sat, 27 Apr 2024 19:10:55 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=15892253 A Sycamore man whose 2022 attack on a West Dundee police officer resulted in a “life-altering” injury has been sentenced to eight years in state prison.

Tylor Z. Hyde, 28, was convicted of a half dozen charges in connection with the incident following a March bench trial heard by Kane County Judge Julia Yetter, who handed down the sentence this past week.

Prosecutors said West Dundee police responded to a domestic disturbance complaint Feb. 3, 2022, at an extended-stay hotel and when they attempted to arrest Hyde, he became aggressive and indicated he had weapon.

During the struggle, Hyde swung at and later shoved an officer as police were trying to handcuff him, a Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office news release said. The push caused a serious injury that “caused the officer to suffer great bodily harm,” the release said.

Tylor was convicted on three counts of aggravated battery and one count each of aggravated assault of peace officer, resisting or obstructing a peace officer causing injury and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

He will receive credit for the 51 days he served in the Kane County jail.

“The officers did everything they were trained to do, and the defendant made a series of choices that led to a life-altering injury for an officer simply doing his job,” Assistant State’s Attorney Katy Flannagan said in the release. “This sentence sends a strong message that violence towards police officers in Kane County will not be tolerated.”

Elgin man guilty in choking death of his wife in case where son, 4, led police to murder scene https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/04/25/elgin-man-ayllon-guilty-murder-wife-wendy-son-wandering/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 16:20:25 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=15887128 An Elgin man has been convicted of killing his wife in a slaying police discovered after his 4-year-old son was found wandering the streets on his own in July 2021.

Victor H. Ayllon, 38, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Wendy Ayllon, who was strangled to death after the couple had a fight at their home in the 300 block of Heine Avenue, a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Prosecutors said Ayllon told them that he and his wife began arguing about his drug addiction and her alleged infidelity, of which there was no evidence, about 2:15 a.m. July 12, 2021. The fight became physical and he choked her to death before fleeing in his car, leaving his two children — ages 3 and 4 — behind, the release said.

Police discovered the woman’s body that evening when they found the 4-year-old by himself at the intersection of Lawrence and North Aldine avenues, leading them to the family’s home about a half mile away, the release said. The 3-year-old was found at the front door, according to the police report.

Victor Ayllon was located at his parents’ home, and was initially taken to the hospital and then released to police. Investigators noted that he had faint marks on his wrists, the release said, and a camera in the couple’s house captured the sound of arguing, the victim screaming and a thud at the time of the attack.

Ayllon is facing a state prison term of 20 to 60 years when sentenced. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 20.

State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement the she hopes Ayllon’s guilty plea “brings some measure of justice for Wendy Ayllon, whose life was tragically cut short, and her family.”

“The heinous action of the defendant, who callously strangled his wife to death and left her body with their two young children, is utterly reprehensible,” she said. “His selfish attempt to evade responsibility for his abhorrent actions demonstrates a complete disregard for human life and parental duty. We will continue to seek the appropriate punishment for this senseless act of violence.”

Wendy Ayllon, an Elgin High School graduate, married Victor Ayllon in 2008. She had a daughter followed by three sons, according to her Facebook page at the time of her death.

She owned a Tupperware business and posted videos online in which she can be seen holding bingo games to win Tupperware items.

On the day she died, she had updated her Facebook profile picture and posted a new photo of herself with her two young sons.
