Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, especially in the late spring, summer and fall or when it’s humid outside. If you enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking or camping during these warmer months, chances are you’ve dealt with mosquitoes before. Since these annoying pests often carry diseases, the best way to enjoy yourself outside without worrying about mosquito bites is with a mosquito killer.

What to consider before you buy a mosquito killer

Type

Here are the most common types of mosquito killers:

  • Bug zappers: Often hung from a porch awning or tree, these use ultraviolet light to lure nearby biting insects to metal grids that electrocute them.
  • Rackets: These work similarly to bug zappers, but many rackets are handheld for more precise use. They also have ultraviolet light and metal grids.
  • Lures: Usually homemade, lures use scents or chemicals, such as carbon dioxide, to attract, trap and kill pests within range.
  • Sprays: Similar to other insecticides, sprays are best for killing dozens of mosquitoes. They’re also a good preventative measure since they can kill any eggs. They come in a handheld bottle.
  • Foggers: Meant for killing large swarms of biting insects, these machines spray out a liquid insecticide in the form of a fog.
  • Dunks: When placed in water, such as a pond, these little round disks release a nontoxic chemical into the water that targets mosquito larvae. They’re similar to mosquito bits.

Range

Most mosquito killers have a range of feet, yards or even acres. Some are designed for close combat, while others work more effectively from a distance or have a more hands-off design.

In general, here are the ranges for each main type:

  • Handheld rackets — within arm’s reach
  • Hanging zappers — 300 to 1,500 square feet
  • Sprays — depends on the nozzle power and how much liquid is in the bottle
  • Foggers — around 5,000 to 10,000 square feet, depending on the machine’s size, power cord length and amount of pesticide
  • Lures — several hundred feet
  • Dunks and bits — up to 100 square feet

Effectiveness

When it comes to effectiveness, there are two things to consider:

  • How long does it take to work?
  • How long does it last?

Foggers, for example, can kill any mosquitoes within range on contact. Since the chemicals remain on any nearby surfaces, they can continue to kill insects for several hours or days after application.

Bug zappers and rackets start working immediately and continuously, provided they’re connected to a power source or have a working battery. But, while some insects are highly attracted to ultraviolet lights, mosquitoes are less so. This makes them somewhat less effective than other options.

If you’re using something that relies on floral or chemical scents, you need to replace it every few days or weeks for it to remain effective. Otherwise, it will lose its potency and stop attracting insects. Some of these killers also take several weeks to start working.

As for mosquito dunks, these are highly effective in small bodies of still water. They can start working nearly immediately and can last up to 30 days.

Natural vs. chemical

When choosing a mosquito killer, you have two options:

  • Natural: These take longer to start working than chemical options, but they’re also usually safer for the environment, children and pets.
  • Chemical: These can start working immediately and often last a long time. However, they’re not recommended if you have outdoor pets or kids. Chemical insecticides can also irritate the throat or nose when a person comes into direct contact with them.

Other targeted insects

Mosquito killers target more than mosquitoes. They can also kill other insects, including:

  • Bees
  • Moths
  • Ants
  • Flies
  • Insect larvae or eggs

Those that use chemicals, such as DEET, can also be harmful to grass or certain plants.

Best bug zapper rackets https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/12/best-bug-zapper-rackets/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 15:07:25 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17283066 Best zapper rackets for killing bugs

With a reliable bug zapper racket, you can dispatch flying insects at close range. Most rackets are durable and designed to kill on contact. This makes them convenient for handling small pest problems around the house. Plus, zapper rackets don’t usually rely on chemicals to work. This makes them a safer, in-house solution to pest control than other options.

Shock strength

Typically represented as volts, shock strength affects how well a bug zapper racket kills insects. Most rackets have a voltage ranging from 500 to 3,000, but the most reliable models have at least 2,000 volts. If you need a stronger insect killer or plan to target multiple pests at once, consider getting a bug zapper that goes outside.

Be careful with rackets that have a higher voltage, as they can run hot with regular use. If you notice yours is starting to overheat, turn it off and take it outside so it can cool down. Alternatively, choose a racket with an outer layer to prevent accidentally shocking your fingers.

Design and material

Bug zapper rackets come in the following main designs:

  • With a protective layer: Some have a mesh outer layer that keeps the user from making direct contact with the electric grid. This is especially beneficial for those with small children, who might injure themselves by using the racket. The downside is that the mesh can also keep larger insects from reaching the grid, making the racket less effective.

  • Without a protective layer: Others don’t have the added mesh layer. While this is good for dealing with insects of all sizes, it doesn’t offer protection from getting shocked.

As the name implies, most bug rackets look like standard rackets, such as those used for tennis. Besides the optional protective layer, these rackets have the following main design features:

  • Handle: This is usually between 7 and 12 inches long. Some handles have an ergonomic design or nonslip grip for easy use.
  • Head: The head size depends on the racket, with some models being larger than others. A larger head means more surface area for killing pests without needing to be precise, while a smaller head requires more accuracy when using the racket.
  • Electric grid: This is often made of wires, while the head and handle are made of hard plastic. The grid is somewhat durable on its own, but it can be damaged if you use the racket like a traditional flyswatter.

Power source

Most bug zapper rackets rely on lithium or AA batteries. These require replacement every couple of years. Some rackets come with additional batteries, while others require a separate purchase.

Some rackets have a built-in rechargeable battery. These rackets often cost more upfront, but they can last a long time and don’t require additional batteries later. Rackets with a rechargeable battery also often have a charging station.

Additional features

Most bug zapper rackets also have the following:

  • Active light or power light: Generally small and red, this light indicates when the electric grid is active. This can keep you from leaving it on when not in use.
  • Special attracting light: Some rackets have an ultraviolet or LED light that lures flying insects.
  • Activate grid button: The electric grid will not activate until you press a specific button on the handle or below the head. Some rackets require holding the button, while others do not.

Targeted insects

Depending on the voltage and size of the grid, electric bug zapper rackets can eliminate small, medium and large insects, such as:

  • Gnats
  • Mosquitoes
  • Moths
  • Ants
  • Fruit flies
  • Horseflies
  • Small centipedes or millipedes

Keep bugs at bay with the 9 best citronella candles https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/12/keep-bugs-at-bay-with-the-9-best-citronella-candles/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 14:53:09 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17283038 Which citronella candles are best?

When you want to avoid pesky bugs while enjoying the outdoors, candles infused with citronella oil may offer some much-needed relief. The essential oil is known to ward off insects, including mosquitoes, by masking the scent of humans to confuse and deter intrusive bugs.

While citronella candles offer a practical use, they can also enhance the ambiance of an outdoor space depending on the design of the vessel, the size and the type of wax used. These are the best citronella candles to consider for your outdoor space.

Top citronella candles

LumaBase Citronella Jar Candles

Each of the three citronella-scented candles in this set is designed to burn for up to 45 hours, providing a lengthy relief from curious bugs. Made from mostly paraffin wax, the candles burn bright, providing a substantial and safe glow. There may be a bit of smoke, but that can also help keep away mosquitoes.

Hyoola Citronella Candle Votive

This relatively low-priced set of 12 votive candles offers terrific value for its coverage and longevity. The candles are safe and sturdy, and the wick burns bright and clean. Each votive is large enough to last up to 12 hours.

UCO Lantern Citronella Candles

This 20-pack of nearly 4-inch-tall citronella candles provides plenty of coverage and convenient use outside. Each burns for up to nine hours with a bright, tall and attractive flame. While these candles are designed to be held within UCO-made lanterns, they can fit effectively in various vessels or containers.

Coleman Repellents Tin Mug Citronella

This clever candle places the citronella oil and wax within a ceramic mug, making it a fun centerpiece and a candle that’s also easy to carry. Sized to burn for up to 50 hours, the wax is infused with a fresh pine scent to create a more woodsy feel wherever you decide to light it. Once exhausted and thoroughly cleaned, the mug can even be used for drinking.

La Jolie Muse Citronella Candle

This decorative set of citronella candles blends functionality with aesthetics. From a company known for its beautiful outdoor decor, these soy candles are sustainable and environmentally friendly, burning subtly without an odor or smoke. The three-wick design makes for an attractive outdoor look, and each candle is made to last up to 30 hours.

Tiki BiteFighter Citronella Wax Candle

This candle provides the best bang for your buck with its low price and large size. The metal bucket of wax is designed to burn up to 35 hours, and at 5 inches in height, it is convenient for use in the backyard or on a camping trip. For patriotic purchasers, a red, white and blue bucket inspired by the American flag is also available.

Murphy’s Natural Mosquito Repellent

Made from a blend of soy and beeswax, this environmentally friendly candle comes from a trusted name in natural products. While it features citronella to keep away bugs, the wax also incorporates peppermint, cedarwood, rosemary and lemongrass for a relaxing, soothing aroma. Despite its relatively small size, it’s designed to burn for up to 30 hours. It comes in a pack of two.

Coleman Scented Citronella Candle

This smaller candle is designed for more intimate outdoor affairs. Its compact size and included lid make it easy to travel with, while the campfire-infused scent and wood-crackling wick create an inviting and nostalgic ambiance.

Candle by the Hour Citronella Candle

Perhaps the most attractive candle on the list, this one features a spiral-shaped design made of natural beeswax, providing a safe, clean and eye-catching burn. However, the focal point of this rustic-looking candle is the copper-colored metal wick holder. In addition, the sturdy base means the candle can be easily moved around an outdoor space without fear of falling.

Keep bugs at bay with the best insect repellent https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/11/keep-bugs-at-bay-with-the-best-insect-repellent/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 15:20:07 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17280700 Comparing insect repellents

Bugs are annoying, their bites can be painful and itchy, and the diseases they sometimes carry can be life-changing. To prevent all those issues, make sure to use an effective insect repellent. Several powerful chemicals are registered as effective bug repellents, and they’re all safe. In addition to topical repellents, there are also some effective products that can deter pests from invading your campsite or outdoor dinner party.

What to consider before choosing an insect repellent

    Is DEET safe?

Despite its controversial reputation, no adverse health effects have ever been observed from the topical application of DEET, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other research institutions. Poor reputation likely stems from a combination of the chemical’s greasy feel, intrusive smell and name, which is similar to DDT.

Either way, DEET remains the most effective, safe topical mosquito repellent. If you’re headed to a region with a malaria risk, don’t hesitate to pack 100% DEET bug spray. It could save your life and prevent permanent illness.

    Natural mosquito repellents

Aside from the scientifically recognized options, there are quite a few “natural” sprays, ointments and other remedies that smell fantastic. Unfortunately, somewhere between few and none of the “natural” insect repellents are worth the plastic they’re packaged in.

Rest assured that there’s no conspiracy from “Big Chemical” to suppress natural mosquito repellents. In fact, essentially, no sprays that claim to be natural are actually natural. The reality is that researchers go to great lengths to test all sorts of novel compounds for bug-repelling properties. The ones that pass the test, such as DEET, picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus, are clinically proven effective.

    Do bug-repellent wristbands work?

Topical repellents such as DEET and PMD only work when they cover all exposed skin. Wristbands come nowhere close to that. The best a wristband could do is prevent bites on a small area of the body, and even then it would only work if there’s basically no air movement.

      Topical insect repellents

Repellent creams and sprays are often considered the most powerful line of defense against biting insects. There are multiple active ingredients with significant scientific evidence backing their effectiveness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Environmental Protection Agency are in the business of registering and recommending the most effective ones.

      The best bug repellents

      Sawyer Products Maxi DEET

Made up almost entirely of DEET, it’s the longest-lasting, the most effective and the best choice for preventing itchy bites and dangerous infections. It comes in a 3.4-ounce spray bottle perfect for carrying onto domestic and international flights.

      Sawyer Products Picaridin Insect Repellent

Nearly as well-respected as DEET, picaridin is highly effective against the most hazardous mosquito breeds and, notably, won’t damage plastic or some synthetic fibers the way DEET does. Sawyer Products offers several types of topicals, including creams and convenient, single-use lotion packs.

      Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Spray

Its active ingredient is called PMD and comes from an industrial extract of the lemon eucalyptus plant, which makes this the closest you’ll get to a truly natural mosquito repellent. It’s also one of the most pleasant-smelling choices and won’t damage leather or synthetic fabrics.

      R&R Lotion Insect Repellent

This one’s formulated around IR3535 as an active ingredient, which is somewhat effective against mosquitos and highly effective against ticks. As such, it’s a good choice for North American backcountry trips where your biggest concern is avoiding Lyme and other diseases.

      3M Ultrathon Repellent Spray

Its 25% DEET formulation is bolstered by a sweat- and splash-resistant solution that helps it to adhere and work for as long as pure DEET, but with less of the offensive smell and greasiness.

      Sawyer Products Permethrin Spray

To be clear, this isn’t a repellent but actually an insecticide. Unlike other bug killers, though, it’s meant for treating clothing before you head out into any wilderness areas where there’s a risk of Zika virus, malaria or other insect-borne diseases.

      Insect repellents for large areas

Contrary to popular belief, citronella candles won’t do much to keep bugs away from your patio. Citronella smoke only makes a noticeable difference in closed quarters. There are, however, some modern and novel options for keeping decently sized outdoor areas mostly free from flying insects.

The top large area bug repellents

      Thermacell EX90

This novel battery-powered solution heats a small reservoir of potent mosquito repellent and creates a nearly mosquito-free zone about 20 feet in diameter. Each insert lasts about 40 hours, so pick up some refills.

      Thermacell Patio Shield

This area-of-effect repellent system uses a sealed butane canister (and no open flames) to disperse the powerful and nontoxic repellent in a circle about 15 feet wide. Again, you’ll need to stock up on refills to use it for more than one night.

      Thermacell Backpacker

After setting up camp in the wilderness, the last thing you want is for bugs to eat you alive. This portable option uses the same isobutane canisters recommended for high-efficiency backpacking stoves to keep a small camp free from pests.

      Off! Clip-on Mosquito Repellent

This is one of the few wearable bug repellents that actually works. It uses a battery-powered fan to disperse a formula designed around metofluthrin, a nontoxic and effective deterrent to biting insects.

      Tips to avoid bug bites

Aside from using an effective bug repellent, there are some simple lifestyle tips that can prevent you from becoming a victim of insects that bite.

      • Avoid the most active times for mosquitoes: The most common breeds are more active during dusk and dawn than at other times of the day. Limiting your time outside at those times can help minimize bites.
      • Get rid of their mating grounds: Mosquito larvae flourish in standing water, so don’t let any sit out during the warm months.
      • Wear loose-fitting clothing: Tight-fitting pants and shirts are relatively easy for bugs to bite through.
      • Avoid wearing dark colors: They tend to attract more bugs than light colors.
      • Minimize alcohol intake: Drinking increases your body’s heat and carbon dioxide footprints while and after you drink, which are the two most common ways that mosquitos and other bugs find their meals.

Best affordable insect traps for a bug-free home and yard https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/11/best-affordable-insect-traps-for-a-bug-free-home-and-yard/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 15:06:16 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17280694 How to choose an insect trap

Insect traps are a useful way of monitoring and keeping pests down, whether inside or out. Traps range in effectiveness based on a few factors, including the type of trap and where you place it. Some can kill flying insects, such as mosquitoes or biting flies. Others are better for crawling critters, including ants and roaches. If you want to prevent and kill unwanted visitors to your home or yard, choosing the right trap type is essential.

      Insect trap types

There are four common types of insect traps:

      • Vacuum traps are best for handling flying insects, especially those that aren’t attracted to light. These traps use a vacuum fan that sucks in nearby pests and confines them in an internal chamber. Due to the design, the captured bugs can’t escape. Some vacuum traps have a removable tray or canister where the dead insects collect.
      • Light traps often use ultraviolet, fluorescent or black light to attract insects. Some use electricity to zap and kill pests, while others have an inner chamber that keeps them until they dehydrate and die. Light traps don’t work on certain insects, such as cockroaches or beetles, because these pests prefer dark spaces. However, they work well on mosquitoes, moths, flies and gnats.

      • Chemical traps often use artificial pheromones, attractants or stimulants to draw in insects. Some emit carbon dioxide, which is especially effective against biting pests such as mosquitoes and horseflies. Most chemical traps are fast-acting but can be mildly harmful to humans or pets with direct exposure.

      • Natural traps are often homemade, nontoxic and a great solution for house pests. They typically use fragrances or ingredients such as vinegar or honey to attract or repel insects. Those that draw in bugs can also trap them in sticky paper or a sealed container they can’t escape.

      Outdoor vs. indoor traps

Some insect traps are specifically for indoor or outdoor use.

      • Indoor traps aren’t very durable against the elements, which is why they’re best for indoor placement. Some can hang, such as sticky tape. Others have a stand or are small enough to fit under the sink, behind kitchen appliances or other problem areas.
      • Outdoor traps are resistant to moisture, so they can be used outside. These include hanging traps, light traps and bug zappers.

      Targeted insects

Some insect traps target only adult pests, while others attract and kill larvae. The most common types of bugs these traps can work against are mosquitoes, biting flies, cockroaches, spiders, beetles, mites and ants.

      Range

Larger traps can attract bugs from a wide distance. This can be beneficial if you’re trying to manage a minor pest problem inside. However, if the trap is too big, it could draw in insects from further away. This could lead to more insects than you had before.

Smaller traps effectively handle enclosed spaces, such as under the bathroom cupboard or in the kitchen. They usually have a limited range, though, meaning they don’t help with other areas inside or outside the home.

If you’re trying to keep bugs away from your patio, driveway or backyard, larger traps can cover around 1,000 square feet. For smaller areas, go with one that has a range of 300 to 800 square feet instead.

      Duration

Some insect traps start working immediately. Others take several days or weeks to start attracting and killing pests.

      Power source

Most insect traps have one of the following power sources:

      • Electricity: More powerful traps rely on electricity to function. These usually have a cord. Newer designs have a USB port you can plug into a computer, tablet or other USB outlets.
      • Battery: Some traps run on a battery, either replaceable or rechargeable. These aren’t limited by a cord, but they’re not always as powerful as electric options.

Some traps, such as sticky traps and glue traps, don’t have a power source at all.

      Which bug zapper should I get? https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/10/which-bug-zapper-should-i-get/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 15:29:07 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17278438 Best bug zappers

Depending on where you live, a bug zapper could be a year-round necessity. But choosing which bug zapper is best for you can be difficult, especially with so many variations out there.

While some bug zappers are designed for use indoors, outdoors or both, other insect killers may include octenol attractants to draw in flying pests. Still, other bug zappers may have entirely different features, like fly-swatting capabilities or USB power.

Before you buy a bug zapper, it’s important to note the things you need in an insect killer, whatever your particular use may be. Below are some factors to consider when looking at insect killers, as well as the best indoor and outdoor bug zappers available.

Factors to consider when looking at bug zappers

      Indoor vs. outdoor bug zappers

While many bug zappers are made to work both indoors and outdoors, there are also many that are made for one or the other. In particular, some outdoor bug zappers are probably too powerful for safe use inside, and alternatively, some indoor-only bug zappers may not be powerful enough to do justice to the insect population in your yard. In either case, it’s important to read any labels on a bug zapper you do purchase, to be sure it correctly fits your needs.

      Bug zapper and attractant

Many bug zappers operate entirely by allowing bugs to fly up to them, and while those work fairly well, others take insect killing to the next level with the use of an insect attractant. An attractant does just what it sounds like—it attracts insects to increase the number of bugs zapped within a certain area, ultimately bringing the number of insects down even further. Many of these attractant packages include octenol, which is particularly useful for attracting mosquitoes.

      Coverage area

With coverage areas ranging between 1,500 square feet to 1 acre, outdoor bug zappers often include information on their packaging or listing about the range of the actual insect killer. While those living on a farm, ranch or other plot of land may benefit from models with an acre of coverage space, those using bug zappers on smaller land or indoors can disregard this specification.

      Which Intex pool should I get? https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/07/which-intex-pool-should-i-get-2/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 15:17:12 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17273082 Best Intex pools

When the midsummer heat makes spending time outdoors feel a little unbearable, having a nice refreshing pool to cool off in can make all the difference. However, in-ground pools can be costly and require much more time and maintenance.

Intex pools are convenient to set up, save on backyard space and cost only a fraction of the price of in-ground options. While the price range will vary depending on the pool size, we’ll cover various Intex models suitable for swimmers of all ages so you can get the most out of the summer season.

      Why choose an Intex pool?

      Price

With the cost of in-ground pools averaging $35,000, they are a significant investment that isn’t feasible for all homeowners. Intex above-ground pools offer a similar experience but allow you to save thousands of dollars. No matter your budget, you can usually find an Intex swimming pool that fits your needs.

      Size

Not everyone needs or wants a large in-ground pool. Many people will be satisfied with a smaller Intex inflatable pool, as they take up much less yard space, leaving you more room for outdoor entertaining or space for kids to play.

      Mobility

Another reason Intex pools are popular is their ability to be moved from one area to another. As they are not permanent fixtures, you can adjust your pool’s location to find the most suitable spot.

      Installation

If you’re still unsure if an Intex pool is right for you, consider the substantially more straightforward installation process. There is no construction or excavation needed. Simply inflate or assemble the frame, fill with water and enjoy.

      Types of Intex above-ground pools

      Intex inflatable pools

Inflatable children’s pools and inflatable vinyl pools are the easiest models to set up and come with the cheapest price tag. Some inflatable options will come with a filter pump, while others will require you to purchase one separately.

Intex 15ft x 42in Easy Pool Set with Filter Pump

This all-in-one pool set includes a ladder, pump, pool cover and ground cloth to protect the pool bottom against rips or tears. This compact inflatable pool fits four to seven people comfortably, making it perfect for the whole family.

Intex Easy Set Up 10ft x 30in Pool

As a mid-sized Intex inflatable pool, you’ll be able to splash around with several friends or family members. The super-simple setup involves no tools and can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Intex Swim Center Family Lounge Inflatable Pool

While it may not be big enough to swim laps or dive underwater, both kids and adults will enjoy the four comfortable built-in seats as they escape the summer heat. Lightweight and easy to transport, everyone ages three and up can take advantage of this compact model.

Intex Mandarin Swim Center Family Pool

With a capacity of 132 gallons and a 13-inch wall, this colorful inflatable pool is great for children or those who just want to cool off and lounge around. You won’t need a filter with this model, and the drain plug makes it easy to empty.

Intex Crystal Blue Kids Inflatable 66in x 15in Swimming Pool

This is the perfect beginner kiddie pool. Young children will have a blast playing, splashing and soaking when the temperatures rise. The heavy-duty vinyl is durable enough to last several seasons.

      Intex framed pools

Intex above-ground pools that utilize a frame are often more durable, stable and better suited for swimming and water sports than some inflatable models. Larger framed pools may take longer to heat up in the sun, so if you prefer warmer water, you might want to consider a solar heating mat.

      Intex 32ft x 16ft x 52in Ultra XTR Rectangular Pool Set

Being the largest above-ground pool on our list means this model also comes with the highest price. However, with all the necessary equipment included, an installation time of under 90 minutes and enough space to host a decent-sized pool party, you’ll quickly realize the great value.

      Intex 24ft X 12ft X 52in Ultra XTR Rectangular Set Pool

The rust-resistant galvanized steel frame keeps this Intex above-ground pool secure and stable, even when multiple people are swimming at once. As with the larger model, there is minimal maintenance required to keep your filter systems functioning.

Intex 18ft X 52in Ultra Xtr Frame Pool Set

An included Krystal Clear sand filter ensures that your pool water is clean and safe all summer long. An excellent mid-sized option, this Intex swimming pool can be assembled, filled and ready to use in about an hour.

      Intex Prism 16.5ft X 9ft X 48in Above-Ground Oval Swimming Set

Built using a unique oval design, this Intex Prism pool offers the maximum swimming area for its size. The Hydro Aeration technology used in many Intex swimming pools creates improved water clarity and more advanced filtration.

Intex 16ft X 48in Ultra XTR Pool Set

Whether it’s a 4th of July party, a backyard cookout or just a hot summer afternoon, six to eight people can take a dip in this pool at the same time without feeling too crowded. Setup takes just 45 minutes and the Easy Lock System keeps the frame sturdy.

Intex 12ft X 30in Prism Frame Pool Set

Using a three-ply liner means you’ll worry less about punctures or rips and spend more time enjoying the water. A smaller size means that this Intex above-ground pool is excellent for backyards that don’t have a ton of space.

Intex 10ft X 30in Metal Frame Pool with Filter Pump

It may be small in size, but the strong PVC material is abrasion-resistant and won’t be damaged by sunlight, making it a heavy-duty option for any backyard. At 2.5 feet deep, this pool is great for ages six and up.

Best inflatable pools to beat the insufferable heat https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/07/best-inflatable-pools-to-beat-the-insufferable-heat/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 14:58:34 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17273054 What are the best kids inflatable pools for summer fun?

Now that school’s out (or will be soon), it’s time to relax and enjoy summer. Cooling off is likely the first step in your relaxation journey. Setting up an inflatable pool is an effortless way to beat the heat and savor the fleeting days of family time without leaving your house. So, if you want to treat your kids to some summer fun, here are the best inflatable pools.

What to consider when choosing an inflatable pool

      Size

Arguably the most important feature to consider when choosing an inflatable pool is the size. For instance, a modest kiddie pool isn’t big enough to entertain elementary-aged kids. Smaller inflatable pools for toddlers generally measure about 48 inches in diameter. Options that can accommodate more people go up to 100 inches across. Be sure to take into account the ages of your children, how many children you need to fit in a pool and the pool’s recommended age.

      Additional features

Many pools come with additional features, whether you have younger children who enjoy sprinklers or adults who want a seat and headrest. Some extras include a slide, sprinkler, basketball hoop, volleyball net and other games. When considering additional features, first decide whether you want a pool mainly for relaxing or for playing.

      Ease of use

Bigger pools with extra features require more time and effort to set up and deflate. You may even need an electric air pump or air compressor to inflate them. Oftentimes, features such as an overhead sprinkler or backrests require separate inflation. Keep in mind it’s best to let a deflated pool dry entirely before putting it away to avoid mold and bacteria. Larger options will take longer to dry.

      Inflatable pool benefits

      • Affordable: Inflatable pools are highly affordable compared to rigid or aboveground swimming pools. Of course, they aren’t as deep and aren’t made for lap swimming, but they are perfect for a hot day.
      • Sets up quickly: Depending on the size of your inflatable pool, most inflate and fill with water in about 30 minutes. An air compressor saves even more time for larger pools.
      • No chemicals: Unlike swimming pools with large amounts of water, inflatable pools don’t require chemicals.
      • Portability: One of the best parts of an inflatable pool is portability. You can use it at home, in the park, on the beach, or on vacation. Plus, you can set it up when you want to use it and take it down when you’re done or if you need extra space.

What are the best pool noodles? https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/06/07/what-are-the-best-pool-noodles/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 14:42:10 +0000 https://www.chicagotribune.com/?p=17273041 Top pool noodles for playing and exercising in the water

Pool noodles are great for keeping you afloat while enjoying time in the pool. They are long, relatively slim flotation devices you can sit or lie on while playing, exercising or sunbathing in the water. Pool noodles range in size, shape and design, so there are noodles suitable for everyone’s style. It’s helpful to understand the options before selecting the right noodle for your needs.

How to choose the best pool noodles

Each element of a pool noodle determines how well it will work for your pool habits. If you’re shopping for noodles for children, you’ll want to stick to shorter noodles with smaller diameters that are easier for kids to grip. On the other hand, solid noodles with soft covers or textures add comfort and support for adults practicing water aerobics.

      Type

Pool noodles are available in three categories: foam, vinyl-coated and inflatable. Each type has its pros and cons.

      • Foam: Foam noodles are the classic choice, and they’re often the most affordable. They come in hollow and solid-core designs, both reliable flotation devices. The foam quality often determines the price, with higher quality foam resisting sun damage and shredding.
      • Vinyl-covered: These foam noodles feature the same interior as plain foam noodles but have a slick vinyl coating on the outside, protecting the foam underneath from damage. Some vinyl coatings also offer UV protection to prevent colors from fading in the sun. They are usually more expensive and wider than plain foam noodles.
      • Inflatable: These lightweight noodles are easy to take anywhere and inflate before use. They can come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Since they’re inflatable, you’ll want to be careful not to puncture them and mind the seams.

      Size

Both the length and diameter determine how comfortable a noodle is to use, how many people can fit on one at a time and how easy it is to carry. Pool noodles can measure between 46 inches and 60 inches long, with some exceptions for extra-long ones. Foam noodles usually measure between 2.5 inches and 4 inches wide. Vinyl and inflatable noodles can measure up to 6 inches in diameter.

      Texture

Some noodles feature additional texturing on the outside to help swimmers find their grip and hang onto the noodle while in the water. Texture also helps diffuse pressure from your body, which is helpful if you stay floating on the noodle for long periods.

      Hollow vs. solid core

Hollow-core noodles have a cutout hole through the center. They are often less expensive but offer less buoyancy, making them ideal for children rather than adults. Noodles with a solid core are more buoyant and safe for all ages.

      Design

Choosing a color or pattern that suits your personality is a fun way to personalize your time in the pool. Noodles often come in bright colors and patterns that also help family and friends keep an eye on swimmers from the poolside.

Some noodles come in curved designs rather than the classic straight pasta-like noodle shape. Curved noodles can be easier to sit on in the water and hold the swimmer more steady. Noodles can also have animal shapes such as a sea horse or unicorn, adding even more fun to the pool party.
